Virginia: Local Impact
Hunger Statistics in Virginia:
Hunger affects communities across Virginia, touching people of all ages, backgrounds, and zip codes.

According to this latest data, 12.1% of Virginians—about one in eight people—experienced food insecurity, while 14.0% of children lacked reliable access to enough food. (Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap 2025, based on 2023 estimates.)
That child food insecurity rate represents an estimated 236,819 Virginia kids (14.0% of the 2023 child population)—enough to fill Scott Stadium (61,500 seats) nearly four times.

About 1,050,300 people across Virginia face hunger. This challenge exists in every county, affecting urban, suburban, and rural communities alike.
Many households experiencing food insecurity earn too much to qualify for federal nutrition programs and instead rely on Virginia food banks and their network of local partner agencies to meet basic food needs.

Northern Virginia Family Services
“The Hunger Resource Center has really been a lifeline for my family,” shared one client. “With grocery prices going up, it’s been tough to keep enough food in the house—especially with kids who are always hungry and growing fast. Knowing there is help when we need it is a huge weight off.” Stories like this reflect why Nourishing Neighbors invests in partners like NVFS, who meet families at moments of need with compassion and care.
Through our support, the Hunger Resource Center serves as both a critical food access point and a gateway to long‑term stability for families across Northern Virginia. Each year, the center distributes more than 642,000 pounds of healthy, culturally responsive food while connecting families to housing support, workforce development, and public benefits like SNAP and WIC. As demand continues to rise, our investment helps ensure families can access nourishment with dignity—while receiving the wraparound support they need to build resilience and move toward lasting independence.
