Hunger Free Vermont, faced with the end of SNAP benefits, has secured a $36,000 grant from Shaw’s Foundation to enhance school breakfast programs. The initiative, known as "Breakfast After the Bell," allows students to have breakfast in class, ensuring access to nutritious meals. Executive Director Anore Horton highlights the significant rise in breakfast participation since implementing this method. The grant aims to support children in having two healthy meals daily at school, addressing the challenge posed by the conclusion of SNAP benefits this month. The Essex-Westford School District has witnessed a doubling of Breakfast After the Bell participants, emphasizing the program's positive impact on student well-being and academic readiness.
