Nourishing Neighbors is a program of Albertsons Companies Foundation (including Safeway, ACME Markets, Shaw's and Star Markets, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Vons among others). Our goal is for all our neighbors including kids, seniors, and families to have access to nourishing food. Through programs that fund breakfast for kids, summer meals, connecting families to federal programs, holiday dinners, backpacks for kids to take home over the weekends, school pantries and many other methods, Nourishing Neighbors' goal is to ensure all our communities' tables and pantries are full so that our neighbors can learn, grow, and succeed.

The purpose of this site is to engage YOU in that effort. We know we can't do it alone and it will take all of us working together to end hunger in our neighborhoods. We encourage you to use this site to learn and connect. Post a video or a comment - we'd love to hear from you!

National supermarket chain Safeway has announced several initiatives aimed at addressing food insecurity. Launching this month, Safeway is now accepting food stamp dollars for online purchases for home delivery or pickup. This new online purchasing program will allow participating shoppers to manage their benefits in real-time via Safeway’s e-commerce platform. This announcement builds upon Safeway’s participation in two other initiatives, based in Washington State, aimed at fighting food insecurity and increasing access to healthy food.

Food insecurity rates have increased dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic. Feeding America, the nation’s largest network of food banks, saw a 50 percent increase in charitable food assistance, with approximately 1 in every 5 adults reporting that they sought food assistance as a result of the pandemic’s economic consequences. According to USDA data, more than 40 million Americans are now enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.

As of January 2022, Safeway stores will now accept SNAP payments online. Safeway’s move follows months of coordination with USDA. In March 2021, the USDA announced that increasing access to online grocery purchasing was a priority area for improving SNAP and “ensuring that all struggling families can get the nutritious food they need.”

Black Communities

\nBlack Americans experience the highest rates of food insecurity. In 2020, an estimated 24% of the Black community experienced food insecurity. Comparatively, only 8% of white Americans experienced food insecurity in 2020. \n
A large factor is the higher rates of poverty among communities of color: in the U.S., Black Americans make up over 23% of people living in poverty, but just 13% of the total population.

While Black communities face the highest rates of hunger, this crisis is impacting various demographics with one or more risk factors for food insecurity. Some of the biggest factors in determining food insecurity risk are income/employment status, education level, disability, geographic factors, and race/ethnicity. These factors can - and often do - overlap with one another, but they all lead to the same tragic conclusion: that millions of Americans are unable to access sufficient and quality food reliably.

Lower-Income Households

\nRates are highest for households with incomes below the poverty line, as income is the most common cause of food insecurity. \n

Women

\nWomen face food insecurity at a disproportionate rate worldwide, making up 60% of people stuck in the hunger cycle. \n
\nIn the U.S., single-mother households have one of the highest rates of food insecurity, with almost 29% affected in 2019. This is compared to only 15% of single fathers affected in 2019. \n

People with Disabilities

\nIn households with an adult who is a recipient of federal or state disability benefits, 22% experience food insecurity. The number is even higher for households with a disabled adult who does not receive government benefits: 33% of these households experience food insecurity. \n
\nNot only does food insecurity risk increase amongst people with disabilities, it can also contribute to worsening health conditions and higher probabilities of chronic disease.\n

Native Americans

\nNative Americans suffer from some of the highest rates of food insecurity, with 25 to 40% of people in rural tribal communities dealing with food and water insecurity. More than 80% of children in these communities rely on schools for breakfast and lunch. \n

Latinx Communities

\nOver 17% of the Latinx population is food insecure, the second-highest rate in terms of race. \n
\nFood insecurity in the Latinx community further reveals the correlation between poverty and hunger: in the U.S., Latinos account for almost 19% of the total population but make up a disproportionate amount of people living in poverty, at over 28%.\n

What is SNAP?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, is the largest government program working to fight hunger in America. An estimated 42 million people used SNAP benefits in 2022 to purchase food for their households.

How does SNAP work?

SNAP provides benefits to low-income families and individuals via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, similar to a debit card. Participants can buy food at grocery centers, local stores, and farmers' markets. The amount on each EBT is dependent on income and family size and replenished monthly.

What can I buy with EBT?

EBT funds can be used to purchase any of the following:

Fruits and vegetables
Meat, poultry, and fish
Dairy products
Breads and cereals
Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
Seeds and plants to produce food for the household

How do I apply for SNAP?

In most states, households can apply in person at a local SNAP office or use a mail-in option if available. Each state has a different application process. Often, local food banks can assist with SNAP applications.

Eligibility varies between states and depends on three factors: gross monthly income, net income, and assets. Some cohorts are ineligible despite earnings, so be sure to check the eligibility guide. Once your application is submitted, it may take 30 days for your SNAP office to process it.

Applicants will be asked to participate in an interview, often over the phone. The necessary documents to review eligibility include identity, residency, immigration status, household composition, income and resources, and deductible expenses. Have these resources available for your application and your interview.

What is NSLP?

The National School Lunch and National School Breakfast Program, NSLP, offer low-cost or free meals for students in public schools, nonprofit private schools, and residential care institutions. The federal program provides nutritionally balanced meals for households struggling to put food on the table or prepare lunch for their children.

Millions of students nationwide participate in NSLP. The program is funded by the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

How does NSLP work?

Participating school districts and independent schools receive cash subsidies and USDA Foods for each meal they serve. Schools cannot charge more than 40 cents for meals.

Select USDA Foods include:

Fruits and vegetables
Certain beef, pork, poultry, and fish products
Legumes
Nuts and seeds
Egg products
Yogurt
Cheese
Grains
Vegetable oil.

These institutions must serve lunches that meet federal meal pattern requirements. Schools can also be reimbursed for snacks served to children who participate in an after-school program.

How do I apply to NSLP?

$\"\"$

Children are categorically eligible for free meals if their household participates in other Federal Assistance Programs, like SNAP, the federally-funded Head Start Program, or based on their status as a homeless, migrant, runaway, or foster child.

Students can also qualify based on household income and family size. Children are eligible if their household is at or below 130% of the federal poverty line.

To apply or receive more information, contact your state agency responsible for administering NSLP in your child’s school district. You may also apply your child for free or low-cost meals through the school district’s application.

What is NSLP?

Millions of students nationwide participate in NSLP. The program is funded by the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

How does NSLP work?

Participating school districts and independent schools receive cash subsidies and USDA Foods for each meal they serve. Schools cannot charge more than 40 cents for meals.

Select USDA Foods include:

Fruits and vegetables
Certain beef, pork, poultry, and fish products
Legumes
Nuts and seeds
Egg products
Yogurt
Cheese
Grains
Vegetable oil.

These institutions must serve lunches that meet federal meal pattern requirements. Schools can also be reimbursed for snacks served to children who participate in an after-school program.

With an issue as complex as food insecurity, misconceptions may arise as communities fight stigma and spread awareness of the problem. These common misunderstandings can give the public the wrong impression about the global hunger crisis and can prevent further change from being made.

Here, we debunked some common myths to help you better understand food insecurity.

Myth: Hunger is not a problem in high-income countries like the United States.

Truth: Food insecurity and hunger impact people in all countries. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than 38 million Americans, including 12 million children, are food insecure. In 2020, over 60 million Americans turned to food banks and community programs to feed themselves and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

High-income countries with developed economies still experience income and resource inequality. The prevalence of food insecurity can fall between 8 to 20% in these regions.

The truth is this: Hunger is a serious public health concern that impacts households worldwide.

Myth: Food insecurity only impacts certain groups, like those experiencing homelessness.

Truth: Food insecurity does not discriminate, though it does impact marginalized groups more frequently. Rural communities are especially vulnerable to food insecurity, and hunger among Black, Latino, and Native Americans is higher than among their white counterparts.

Hunger most often affects those who live in poverty. Since communities of color, women, people with disabilities, and seniors face high poverty rates, they are more susceptible to hunger.

Myth: Food insecurity can be solved through more food.

Truth: Food insecurity is caused by numerous factors, including deep-rooted systems of inequity. Hunger is frequently a symptom of poverty, which people of color experience more often than their white counterparts.

Frequently, households have to decide between buying food and paying bills. A 2014 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that nearly one in five adults – 18.8% – reported experiencing food insecurity at some point during the previous 30 days. Of those experiencing food insecurity, nearly 3 in 10 (27.4%) reported delaying or foregoing medical care in the last month.

Feeding America found that 69% of low-income households had to choose between food and utilities, while 66% had to choose between food and medical care. Having more food in the world will not solve the crisis–but making food more accessible could mitigate some of these issues.

Myth: Programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are handouts for people who don’t want to work.

Truth: SNAP benefits communities everywhere and assists families during difficult times. The program helps households with only a portion of their food budget.

Primarily, SNAP helps low-income workers. On top of giving families a helping hand, SNAP can benefit the economy by boosting sales at local stores. SNAP expects families to spend 30% of their net income on food, while an average American spends about 8.6% of their income on food. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has found that SNAP has one of the largest “bangs-for-the-buck” in terms of boosting the economy – every dollar spent on the program provides more than a dollar in economic and employment benefits.

The program is not a handout, and does not solve food insecurity, but it does greatly assist those in need.

Rates of hunger

\nLGBTQIA+ individuals face higher rates of food insecurity in the United States compared to non-LGBTQIA+ people. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that during the pandemic, LGBTQIA+ households became nearly twice as likely to be food insecure. \n
Similarly, as of January 2021, LGBTQIA+ individuals receive SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, benefits at twice the rate of straight-cis people.

Why are LGBTQIA+ people more likely to face hunger?

The bureau’s 2021 House Pulse Survey revealed that over one-third of adults in the community are facing financial struggles. In comparison, just over one-quarter of adults who do not identify as LGBTQIA+ reported economic insecurity.
\nDr. Joanne Patterson of Ohio State University found that transgender women, gender-nonconforming people, and lesbian or bisexual women tend to have lower incomes compared to the general population and to gay men, which leads to decreased access to food. In general, women face increased rates of food insecurity, making up around 60% of those stuck in the hunger cycle. \n
\n29% of the transgender population lives in poverty, which is the most common cause of food insecurity. \n

\nLGBTQIA+ individuals still face discrimination in the workplace, which can cause an inconsistent income. According to a national survey, at least 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ individuals have experienced discrimination in hiring, pay, and promotions, while 16% of transgender workers report having lost their jobs due to discrimination. In 2019, 52% of LGBTQIA+ adults lived in states where no laws existed to protect them from harassment or discrimination in the workplace. This discriminatory treatment in the workplace leads to fewer economic opportunities and perpetuates the hunger cycle for minority groups. \n
Many LGBTQIA+ couples face alternate expenses to parenthood, including adoption costs, gestational surrogacy, in-vitro fertilization, and more. These costs create a greater financial burden for the household, in turn causing a higher likelihood of food insecurity.

The facts are clear - hunger comes in many forms.

What is a community fridge?

Community fridges are a free, anonymous source of food with 24/7 accessibility. Anyone can drop off food that they don’t want, or would otherwise throw away, for another person in the community to enjoy. Think of it as crowd-funding a full fridge.

Most community fridges welcome nonperishable goods, snacks, boxed meals, bottled water, juice, bread, fresh produce, and more.
Leftovers and expiring foods are usually not welcomed.
\nSome fridges, however, do accept prepared meals for houseless community members--check your local fridge’s guidelines before dropping off your favorite dish.\n
Contributions are not limited to food, miscellaneous household items are frequently donated.

The community fills the fridge through drop-off donations and digital collections.
People use platforms like Venmo, CashApp, and GoFundMe to donate to the community fridge.
Participants also partner with supermarkets, local businesses, and food assistance organizations to save food that would otherwise be discarded.
Fridges in each location need a host, or a building to supply power to the appliance. These hosts are usually connected to the community, like a community center, a place of worship, or local business.

The popularity of community fridges

The proliferation of community fridges is a grassroots reaction to the food insecurity crisis in America.
They promote equal access to food through community-based donations, especially in neighborhoods where food assistance is difficult to receive. Food banks are not always close by, so community fridges offer a transportation-free option.
Community fridges also grew in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as they didn’t (and don’t) require people to congregate for meals. The fridges continue to provide assistance to those ineligible for COVID-19 relief, like undocumented residents and families.
Government policies towards fridges vary across the country. Traditionally, they are treated as common property, governed by community rules, and left alone by health inspectors.
